Suggested Programs

Each of the following programs falls under one of three categories: 1. Contemporary pieces and lesser-known works of mainstream composers, 2. Traditional favorites from the 17th–19th centuries and 3. Violin vignettes for a lighter evening or afternoon of music.

American Inscriptions

This program delves into the music of some of America’s preeminent contemporary composers. Although each composer communicates through a uniquely different voice, their works all share a deeply human and emotional quality as well as intelligent compositional clarity.

Shulamit Ran Inscriptions
John Corigliano Sonata
John Adams Road Movies
John Harbison Four Songs of Solitude

On the Road

Spanning five countries, this program offers insight into the diverse culture of each composer’s native land. Whether it is the intense passion of the tango, the sultry rhythm of jazz, or the barren loneliness of the “irkanda,” each selection is certain to stir up a variety of emotions.

Paul Hindemith Sonata for Solo Violin, Op. 31, No. 2
Serge Prokofiev Sonata in f minor, Op. 80
John Adams Road Movies
Peter Sculthorpe Irkanda I
Astor Piazzolla Tango Etudes

Northern Lights

Inspired by Northern Europe, this program is centered around works from Russia, Estonia and Norway. Although different in style, the composers featured have a common thread running through their musical voices.

Serge Prokofiev Sonata in f minor, Op. 80
Arvo Pärt Fratres
Pytor I. Tchaikovsky Serenade melancolique, Op. 26
Edvard Grieg Sonata No. 3 in c minor, Op. 45

Illuminations

This program sheds light on lesser performed works of Mendelssohn, Szymanowski and Strauss. It also features a new work “Driven,” written for solo violin and dancer, in which the music is illuminated through the choreography of the dance.

Felix Mendelssohn Sonata in F Major (1820)
Karol Szymanowski Romance, Op. 23
Jeffery S. Story Driven, for solo violin and dancer (2004)
Richard Strauss Sonata in E Major, Op. 18
Maurice Ravel Tzigane, rhapsodie de concert

“Eroica”

This program draws its inspiration from Beethoven’s heroic key of E Major, the key in which he wrote the “Eroica” Symphony. Richard Strauss’ symphonic tone-poem Ein Heldenleben (A Hero’s Life) is also in E Major, and his Violin Sonata in the same key is featured in the second half.

Alfred Schnittke Suite in the Olden Style
Ludwig van Beethoven Sonata No. 3 in E Major, Op. 12, No. 3
Karol Szymanowski Romance, Op. 23
Richard Strauss Sonata in E Major, Op. 18

Florestan and Eusebius

This program explores Robert Schumann's obsession with his masculine side, Florestan, and his feminine side, Eusebius. Florestan and Eusebius appeared in Schumann’s journal and in his music, as can be heard here in his violin sonata. The flamboyant Florestan follows the more controlled Eusebius, particularly at the opening of the piece.

Robert Schumann Sonata No. 1 in a minor, Op. 105
Karol Szymanowski Nocturne and Tarantelle, Op. 28
Clara Schumann Drei Romanzen, Op. 22, Nos. 1-3
César Franck Sonate in A Major

Dances, Tales and Reflections: A Journey

J.S. Bach’s “Ciaconna” for violin solo is arguably the greatest example of a composer’s ingenuity in writing for a string instrument. This dance suite movement encompasses a journey through many variations and colors. It seems to tell a story in itself which the listener is left to reflect upon as the final notes die away.

J. S. Bach Ciaccona in d minor, BWV 1004
Igor Stravinsky Duo Concertante
Maurice Ravel Tzigane, rhapsodie de concert
Johannes Brahms Sonata No. 2 in A Major, Op. 100

“Beau Soir”

This wonderful program of violin vignettes will make for a beautiful evening’s music. When woven together, the variety and color of these mini-masterpieces will delight the listener.

Ernest Bloch Baal Shem
Claude Debussy La fille aux cheveux de lin
  Beau Soir
Edward Elgar Salut d’amour
  Chanson de la nuit
Carl Engel Sea Shell
Fritz Kreisler Selections
